News: MMC Election
Abstractsmedical_news writes "Nashik-based surgeon Vasant Pawar, elected the Maharashtra representative in the Medical Council of India at the end of its polls on Friday, pledged to improve the standard of health education in the state. Dr Pawar (59), who bagged 7,911 of the total 15,690 votes, said, “There is a major shortage of medical teachers.” As representative, he promised to propose to the MCI and the state government to increase the capacity of postgraduate students in a bid to improve teachers’ numbers. “Currently, there is a migration of medical teachers from one college to another and one state to another. If we don’t take prompt action, our teachers will migrate abroad,’’ he observed. A general surgeon from Nashik, Dr Pawar said his main focus would be on “implementing the honorary system in medical colleges.’’ He held that though not mandatory, all doctors should become members of the Indian Medical Association, as it would assure delivery of improved healthcare and also give more security to them. Candidates allege rigging in polls Some of the candidates have protested against the electoral procedure followed in the MCI polls and even alleged rigging. “There was foul play even in the counting process. Some of the ballots were white-inked indicating that they had been tampered with,’’ alleged Dr Shrikant Pandit from J J Hospital, who contested the elections. Director of medical education and research Dr W B Tayade, the incharge of the polls, denied the allegations. “From the declaration of the elections to the declaration of results, there has been absolutely no deviation from the MCI Act,’’ claimed Dr Tayade."
